Escape from Falaise

This book is the 5th book in the Royal Ranger series and probably my most favorite one yet.  It was just so interesting and fun to read, and I just really love this book, and the author who wrote it, John Flanagan.

It starts at the very moment that the last book ended, with Will and Maddie getting caught trying to take Prince Giles out of Baron Lassigny’s castle.   They get put into a dungeon, however, soon after they get moved to a suite of rooms in one of the towers.  They are summoned by Baron Lassigny, and they find out that they were betrayed by someone who was in the party with the King of Gallica in the 4th book.  Will and Maddie first mislead the Baron by telling them that the Ranger Corps are just a harmless group of foresters that work for the king, however, in their next meeting with the Baron, they tell him the the Rangers are actually an elite force that can lead armies, and are extremely skillful with the bow.  They also reveal that they are members of the Ranger Corps, but the commander of the garrison, Armand, doesn’t believe that Maddie, a young woman, could ever fight.  Maddie surprises everyone by challenging Armand to a duel, the first to unseat the other on horseback is declared the winner.  Unknown to Will and Maddie, Horace and Halt are present in the crowd watching the duel.  Halt was posing as a beggar, to keep an eye on Will and Maddie in case something went wrong.  The Baron is furious at Maddie’s victory, and they are locked back up in the tower, but with only a grueling diet to sustain themselves.  Halt comes to the rescue and the 3 escape together, but Maddie wants to stay at the village near the castle for a few more days…

This book is hands down 5 stars, I absolutely loved it, and I reread it several times already.  This is an amazing book by an amazing author, and what I really loved was all the funny parts in this book, the puns, and so on.  So yes, this book is highly recommended from me, and I would also recommend reading the Ranger’s Apprentice series and the other books in the Royal Ranger.
