The Best Series for 13 Year Olds

January 21, 2024

As a 13 year old, it can be incredibly difficult to find a series that is actually fun. A lot of series don’t have any thought put into them, while some are too overcomplicated and convoluted. So here are my top picks for the best series for any 13 year old to read.

  1. Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth is an absolutely incredible dystopian series. It takes place in a future society, where everyone is split up into “factions” based on their personal characteristics. This series is full of suspense, action and adventure, all presented with incredible detail. I highly recommend this series to basically anyone as they will instantly fall in love with this series.

  1. The Illuminae Files

The Illuminae Files is another amazing sci-fi series. In a time where humans have spread across the galaxy, and megacorporations have a massive influence, being targeted by one of them is something that you do not want happening. Unfortunately for the mining colony of Kerenza IV, BeiTech Industries and their battlefleet are taking over the planet, and the colony must do whatever it can to survive. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff use incredible detail and description to give us a grappling story, filled with eccentric ideas and story lines.

  1. Legacy of Orisha

The Legacy of Orisha is a wonderful fantasy series set in the Kingdom of Orisha. In this series Zelie and her friends are fighting against the monarchy to undo the destruction brought upon their kind 11 years ago, in the Raid.  Hundreds of Maji, people who can cast and control magic were slaughtered, including her own mother.  She has to complete an ancient ritual to bring back magic, but there are many, many obstacles in her path. This is an ongoing series, with the 3rd book coming in 2024. Right now, I am super anxious to finally read the conclusion to this thrilling series, which captivated my attention in every way possible.

  1. Masterminds

Masterminds is a realistic-fiction series where several 12 and 13 year old kids in Serenity, New Mexico are exact DNA replicas of some of the worst criminals in history.  However, unknown to them, they are part of an experiment, to see if an upbringing can affect a human’s characteristics. Then, they find out about this, and from then on, they are continuously on the run, to avoid being recaptured. This series had so many funny and thrilling moments despite its seemingly cold and dark nature. It was an absolute blast to read and I highly, highly recommend reading this series.

  1. Leviathan

Leviathan is a steampunk novel set in the time period of World War 1. However, technology is much more advanced, where the Clankers have massive metal walkers and ships, capable of unleashing mass destruction and the Darwinists have fabricated animals, including the whaleship. Alex is a fleeing prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after his parents have been assassinated, and is on the run from his very own people. He is able to find refuge in Switzerland, until a whaleship comes crash landing near them. This series is very unique, capturing an old time in a new light and image. It takes realistic elements and makes them incredible and extraordinary, and I love this series because of it.
